Serpents and ophicleides

If you were wondering about the ophicleide (which the OED defines as an obsolete bass brass instrument with keys. ORIGIN French, from Greek ophis ‘serpent’ + kleis ‘key’), here’s a whole trio of them – and very mellifluous it is, too! Meanwhile, above, is a picture of what appears to be a Roman soldier fighting with a serpent.
