During 1945 a young American intelligence officer, John de Lancie, who had, before the war, been principal oboist in the Pittsburg Symphony orchestra paid several visits to Strauss’ Alpine villa in Garmish. He complimented the composer on his writing for oboe and asked him if he had ever considered writing a concerto for the instrument. Strauss’s answer was monosyllabic: ‘No’.
