Missa Solemnis

Beethoven composing his Missa solemnis
Joseph Karl Stieler’s portrait, dated 1819, depicts Beethoven in the throes of composing his Solemn Mass. Intended for the installation ceremony (on March 9th, 1820) of Beethoven’s patron and pupil, the Archduke Rudolph, as Archbishop of Olomouc in Moravia, the work wasn’t actually completed until 1823. It was given its first performance in St. Petersburg on 7th April, 1824.
