Opera

We’ve looked at the specific background to Mozart’s opera. This week I want to start by considering, briefly, the history and conventions of the entire genre.

Meanwhile, here’s the opening duet of The Marriage of Figaro as performed by Dawn Upshaw (Susanna) and Ferrruccio Furlanetto (Figaro); the Salzburg Festival performance (1991) is directed by Bernard Haitink.
