DIY opera (…or operetta …or musical)

The basic plot of most comic operas (and their progeny, the operetta and the musical) is the highly original ‘girl meets boy’ followed, after a wodge of trial and tribulation, by ‘and they lived happily ever after’.
No Marriage of Figaro this week (or very little, anyway); instead, we look at how Mozart and subsequent generations of composers have dealt with the constituent parts of this drama: the heroes, the heroines, the good, the bad, the downright nasty…
