…et je danse


Unlike their teutonic neighbours the French (and the Russians) have always cultivated an interest in dance. In Paris, during the 19th and early 20th century, ballet was to evolve into one of the major art forms; this culminated in a series of Franco-Russian and French masterpieces that were to play a significant part in shaping the future of music (Petroushka, The Rite of Spring, Daphnis and Chloë, Jeux).


But what about the symphony? Well, if across the Rhine everyone was struggling with the legacy of that impossibly hard act to follow, Beethoven, there was an (almost) uniquely Gallic solution to the problem…
