Debussy: La mer

Katsushika Hokusai: The Great Wave off Kanagawa

We step outside the Austro-Germanic ‘classical’ tradition to listen to a work that is almost (almost, but not quite) the polar opposite of the chamber and symphonic works we have examined so far: Debussy’s three symphonic sketches, La Mer.

De l'aube à midi sur la mer (From dawn to midday on the sea), Jeux de vagues (Play of the waves) and Dialogue du vent et de la mer (Dialogue of the wind and the sea) are the titles of the three movements of this French ‘symphony’. Debussy chose Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa as the cover illustration of his published score.
