In the finale of Sibelius’s fifth several of the ideas that we have heard in the previous movements come together, revealing the complex system of cross-reference that the composer has used to unify his work.
Like the Wanderer Fantasy, Wagner’s Mastersingers prelude presents us with a concise multi-movement/single movement shape – a precursor of the one movement forms of Sibelius, Strauss, Schönberg, etc. It also demonstrates, incidentally, that Wagner was no slouch when it came to writing counterpoint!
