Nationalism: the dark side?

Das Rheingold

The fire god Loge menaced by Alberich in the form of a serpent
In 1850 a certain Herr K. Freigedank published an article in Leipzig’s Neue Zeitschrift für Musik entitled Das Judenthum in der Musik (which can roughly be translated as Judaism in Music). The name Freigedank (freethought) was a pseudonym; the article was by Richard Wagner.
That Wagner was anti-semitic is an incontestable fact; the question is, does his prejudice (which seems to have been mainly driven by a small minded envy of the success of Mendelssohn and Meyerbeer) extend to his music?
