Pestilence, War and Revolution

Albrecht Dürer: The Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Two Masses: one to celebrate the end of a plague; the other to pray for peace in time of war.

As, in the Middle Ages, the Ars Antiqua gave way to the Ars Nova; so, with Monteverdi and his contemporaries, the Stile Antico, as exemplified by the music of Palestrina, ceded place to the Stile Moderno – polyphony gave way to monody.
