Giovanni Palestrina and Pope Julius III |
Many music students think of Palestrina as a sadist who invented ‘strict’ or ‘species’ counterpoint as an instrument of torture more painful and exquisite than either thumbscrew or rack. History has, however, exonerated Pierluigi from blame; the truth is that, should he be alive today and submit some of his most revered work as answer in an exam, he’d fail miserably –
“Look here, Giovanni, you’ve broken five rules in your first bar! You’ll never pass.”A composer with a wonderful ear for rich sonority and a grasp of counterpoint equal(?) to that of Josquin or Byrd.
