William Byrd |
This week focus moves from France to the England of the Tudors. The composers Thomas Tallis and William Byrd were very much part of that great cultural flowering that took place throughout the Tudor dynasty and particularly during the reign of Elizabeth I. Yet both men were constrained to live part of their lives clandestinely, in fear of, and pursued by spies and informers, a persecution that is reflected in their music.
