Brahms’ last orchestral work – the Double Concerto in a Op. 102 – was by way of being a peace offering to his friend, the virtuoso violinist, Joseph Joachim. They has quarreled when Joachim felt that Brahms had sided with his (Joachim’s) wife during a particularly acrimonious divorce settlement. The work is dedicated “to him for whom it was written” (i.e. Joachim).
